August 2025

National Senior Citizens Day, observed in the USA on August 21, recognizes seniors who have spent their lives contributing to society and have impacted everyone’s lives for the better. Improved healthcare has changed demographics and increased productivity of older citizens, and they are more active than ever before.

Did you know that Yoga can be an excellent activity for seniors for a multitude of reasons?

Yoga is beneficial for anyone with a disability or chronic health condition.  It improves balance, joint mobility, and lung functioning, which is great for everyone, but especially helpful for seniors.

Yoga also creates community.  The act of gathering together to practice yoga provides interaction, stimulation, and companionship.

Here are some stats (based on the USA) about seniors.

22% — the percentage increase in the population of 60+-year-olds by the year 2050.

2020 — the year when the number of people aged 60 and above outnumbered children younger than five years.

60 — the age after which a person is considered to be a senior citizen.

3.6% — the percentage of people over 65 years old who are in nursing homes.

4 in 5 — the number of older adults who will battle at least one chronic illness.

50% — the percentage of elderly people who battle at least two chronic diseases.

75 — the age at which one in three elderly people don’t get any physical activity.

How is your studio or instruction supporting seniors in your community?

Consider enhancing your knowledge on adaptive poses.

Think about where you can engage seniors locally.

Reach out to a seniors centre near you to find out if you can provide classes.

Inclusion isn’t something that just happens.

We have to work at it. Here’s how you can practice inclusion: Ask, don’t assume: What would make someone feel included? Instead of guessing, we can ask others what makes them feel comfortable. Be open
