The Light We Share: Reflections on the Summer Solstice and Inclusive Yoga

The Summer Solstice marks the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. For many, it is a time of celebration, gratitude, and connection to the natural rhythms that surround us. It invites us to pause, reflect, and appreciate the abundance of the season.
In yoga, light is often used as a symbol of awareness—not simply illumination, but understanding. It reminds us of our capacity to learn, to grow, and to deepen our connection with ourselves and others.
As someone who has spent much of my career working in the disability sector and who has found tremendous meaning in my own yoga practice, the solstice often invites me to reflect on what it means to create spaces where people truly belong.
Yoga philosophy teaches us that we are connected. It reminds us that our practice extends far beyond the poses we do on a mat and into the ways we relate to the people around us. The values of compassion, non-harming, truthfulness, and belonging are not separate from yoga; they are yoga.
The Summer Solstice is often associated with abundance, vitality, and growth. Yet yoga also reminds us that our worth is not measured by how much we accomplish, produce, or overcome.
As I prepared for this year's solstice, I found myself returning to a reflection I recently shared with my students:
"The sun shines on every body equally. It does not ask us to earn its warmth. In the same way, this practice invites us to remember that our worth is not determined by what we can do, achieve, or overcome. We belong exactly as we are."
Those words continue to resonate with me because they speak to something fundamental about both yoga and inclusion: belonging is not something we earn.
Belonging is not reserved for those who move in a particular way, communicate in a particular way, learn in a particular way, or participate in a particular way. It is not dependent on ability, productivity, flexibility, or achievement.
Belonging begins with recognizing the inherent value and dignity that exists within every person.
Yet many people continue to encounter barriers that prevent them from fully participating in yoga spaces. Some barriers are physical. Others are financial, attitudinal, communicational, or cultural. Many are not immediately apparent to those who do not experience them directly.
Awareness invites us to deepen our understanding of these experiences. It encourages us to listen with curiosity, to learn from perspectives different from our own, and to consider how our words, our spaces, and our practices can better reflect the values we hold dear.
The beautiful thing about inclusive yoga is that it does not ask us to be perfect. It asks us to be present. It asks us to remain open to learning and to recognize that inclusion is not a destination but an ongoing practice.
Perhaps that is one of the gifts of the solstice. In a season that celebrates light, we are invited to deepen our awareness, strengthen our connections, and nurture communities where everyone feels welcome.
As we move into the second half of the year, may we carry forward the warmth of the season. May we continue to learn, to grow, and to create spaces where every person knows they belong.
Wishing you a joyful, meaningful, and reflective Summer Solstice.
